A Gothic Christmas – Ghost Story Advent Calendar

A hand-illustrated advent calendar for lovers of gothic tales: find 24 hidden doors in a candlelit Victorian parlour and guess the ghost story behind each.

Product description

Long before Christmas meant tinsel, the Victorians had a different tradition: telling ghost stories by the fire on Christmas Eve.

On a stormy Christmas Eve, in a candlelit parlour full of old portraits, a raven on a marble bust and a little ghost drifting near the ceiling, Father Christmas is reading from a big old book of ghost stories to three wide-eyed listeners. Hidden all around them are 24 little doors. Behind each one is a character or scene from a classic gothic tale. Every morning in December, find the door, open it and guess the story.

A creature alone on the Arctic ice. A raven above a chamber door. A headless rider on a bridge. A monkey's paw on the mantelpiece… Some you'll know in a heartbeat. Others are delicious rarities for true fans of the genre.

How it works

  1. Find the door. Search the parlour for today's number, hidden on a bookshelf, the window, the piano or the Christmas tree.
  2. Open it. A moody hand-drawn scene from a gothic classic is waiting inside.
  3. Guess the story. Name the character or the tale, then the author.
  4. Check the answers on Christmas Eve. All 24 stories, with their authors and dates, are listed on an illustrated answer sheet, sealed in its own envelope.

Why gothic readers love it

  • A Christmas tradition revived: ghost stories were once as much a part of Christmas as carols.
  • The great gothic tales: Frankenstein, Dracula, Poe, The Turn of the Screw, The Monkey's Paw, The Canterville Ghost, The Woman in White, M. R. James and more.
  • A Christmas finale: door 24 brings the most chilling Christmas ghost of all.
  • Atmospheric but not gory: spine-tingling scenes in a warm ink-and-watercolour style, never bloody.
  • Screen-free and sugar-free: a December ritual for the reader who prefers candles, storms and a good fright.

Fans of gothic novels and ghost stories, Poe and Shelley devotees, dark-academia readers, book clubs, English literature students and teachers, and anyone who finds Halloween ends far too soon.
