It's Christmas Eve at the old theater. The lobby is full, the elves are tuning up in the orchestra pit, and Santa has stepped into the spotlight with a skull in his hand. But this theater is keeping secrets.

Hidden among the opera boxes, dressing-room mirrors, stage doors, prop trunks and attic windows are 24 little doors. Behind each one waits a tiny stage with the most famous scene from a classic play. Your challenge this December: find today's door, watch the scene, and guess which play it comes from.

From Sophocles to Shakespeare, from Molière and Ibsen to Wilde and Chekhov, these are the plays that have filled theaters for centuries. Some you'll know at first glance. Others will have you quoting lines and pulling scripts off your own shelves for clues.

How it works

1. Find the door. The numbers are tucked into the illustration and not in order, so the hunt is half the fun.
2. Open it. A hand-drawn scene from a famous play is waiting inside, framed by little red velvet curtains.
3. Guess the play. Say it out loud, write it down, or act it out and turn it into a family game.
4. Check your answers on Christmas Eve. All 24 answers, with play title, playwright, city and year of the premiere, are sealed in an illustrated envelope. No peeking!
