Outside, the snow is falling. Inside the old Victorian glasshouse, the stove is warm, the lanterns are glowing, and Father Christmas, in his gardening gloves, is watering a pot of flowers.

Hidden among the potting benches, the terracotta pots, the hanging baskets and the seed drawers are 24 little doors. Behind each one is a flower, shrub or berry that brings colour to the darkest months of the year. Every morning in December, find the door, open it and name the plant.

Spidery yellow witch hazel on bare branches. Purple crocuses pushing through the snow. A Christmas cactus in full bloom on the windowsill… Proof that the garden never really sleeps.

How it works

1. Find the door. Search the glasshouse for today's number, hidden on a pot, a pane of glass, a bench or a basket.
2. Open it. A delicate hand-drawn botanical study is waiting inside.
3. Name the plant. Common name first, Latin name for bonus points.
4. Check the answers on Christmas Eve. All 24 plants, with their Latin names and when they bloom, are listed on an illustrated answer sheet, sealed in its own envelope.
